Something Different, “The Injection” : An Interview with Miz Korona
By: Glennisha Morgan
You’ve seen her in the movie 8 mile. If you’re from Detroit and love Hip Hop then you’ve seen her at Detroit’s infamous “The Shelter” aka St. Andrews on numerous occasions. You’ll have a chance to see her again this Tuesday at 5E Gallery for “The Foundation”. She’ll be featured live with the band YIN giving listeners a small taste of her new upcoming album, “The Injection”. Miz Korona has been busy working hard in the studio to perfect her new album but, she took some time away to tell The Fembassy about it.
Can you tell us a bit about your upcoming album?
Well the album is titled “The Injection”. It’s produced by Chanes. Marv Won has the only other track that isn’t produced by Chanes.
In reference to the title, are you trying to get your listeners high off this album?
(laughs) Yeah! This is an introduction to something different. I want this album to be that rush that drug addicts may feel. I want to get people addicted to this music that I’ve been making for the past 90 million years.
When is the actual release date?
We’re looking at the end of February. It’s difficult to actually pin point an exact date. I’m trying to generate a buzz for now. I don’t want to release it too early and then people don’t really anticipate it. So basically we’re trying to create a buzz and a want for the album.
What’s the first single from the album?
We’ve been putting out a couple of joints. “Like a Zoo” started it off. When we put out “Like a Zoo” it caught on. People were feeling it. When I did the Youtube video for “Cookin” people went crazy. So I thought, “Okay, we may have to use this to get people’s attention.” Originally “Cookin” wasn’t supposed to be on the project because it was on an album that I was doing when I was with another production company. I had a hard time getting them to release some of the songs.
(Listen to “Cookin” here. )
Are there any guest appearances or collaborations?
I have Ketchphrase from Street Justice, Marv Won, Moe Dirdee, and Big Tone. I was supposed to have Phat Kat but, he’s on tour right now. So it’s been really difficult. It’s been really difficult getting a lot of features, believe it or not. It makes it better because it’s just me versus having an album full of features. I’m currently working on getting a joint with this singer from Detroit named Suai. Hopefully that will pan out. I’m kind of pushing the timeline by still submitting these songs but, I trust I can get it done.
With the collaborations you’re definitely keeping it home based.
Yes. I could have got a couple of people that I’m cool with but, like I said everybody’s time schedule is crazy. I really don’t have time to wait on people. So God willing it does well when it drops so next time people will be timelier when hopping on a project.
How does this album differ from your other ones?
This project is different from the other ones because I have creative control over everything. I’ve been in the studio just really doing whatever came to mind and whatever my heart felt. We made the beats and did everything from scratch. Whatever the track made me feel like doing that’s what I worked on opposed to being in the studio and being under a production label. They basically sign you and tell you what type of songs they want you to make. It seems less genuine when you do it like that. So I just worked from my heart. I just felt like this album is more me than anything. If anybody has ever seen me perform, that element is what they’re going to get on this album. It’s not really commercial. It’s me bringing back that rough, pure raw edge, and what female Hip Hop used to be.
So basically you were less influenced?
Right, exactly. You want to work with people who can see your vision and help you bring that vision to life.
Are you currently signed with someone?
I’m a free agent. My producer, Chanes and I aren’t under any contractual agreement with one another. I’m not tied to anybody. I’m just doing my thing. I’m not really interested in signing to a major label anymore. I’ve chased that horse many years ago and nobody latched on. So now I’m just doing my own thing.
Do you have any videos for this album?
At the moment, no. I’ve came up with a couple of concepts but, I don’t really have a budget. Right now it’s in my visual but, I don’t have the funds to make the video that I want.
For people who want a visual you just have to tell them to come out to a show.
Exactly!
You took some time away from “The Foundation” to work on this album. Can we expect you back after the album release?
I’m ready to go back in there and do my thing but, we have La La Trips, Mz.Jonz, and Piper holding it down for now. It’s cool that the girls are understandable but, I am ready to get back in there and do my hosting thing. The Foundation is home. After the album drops hopefully the only that will keep me from hosting at “The Foundation” is touring.
On Tuesday, November 24th you’ll be performing live with the band YIN at The Foundation at 5E Gallery. Do you have any other upcoming shows?
Yes, Wednesday I’ll be at the Detroit Hip Hop Reunion.
